KOPN 89.5 FM began broadcasting in March 1973 as a 10-watt radio station owned and operated by the New Wave Corporation. Today, KOPN reaches much of central Missouri with its 36,000-watt signal and its webstreaming reaches the whole world. KOPN broadcasts a diverse mix of community, national and international news, talk and music programming. Most of this programming orginates and is produced locally by more than 100 volunteer programmers. KOPN supports local businesses and orginizations with up to 4 channels to distribute information: PSAs, underwriting acknowledgements, a web-site calendar, and interview opportunities.
The New Wave Corporation is a Missouri Non-For-Profit Corporation. The Corporation is governed by a board of elected and appointed directors. KOPN was among the first 10 open-access, listener supported, community radio stations in the United States. It is a founding member of the National Federation of Community Broadcasters (NFCB).
The New Wave Corporation/KOPN 89.5 is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt educational organization. KOPN relies on listener support (donations and underwritting), grant support from governmental and non-governmental organizations, and over 17,000 hours a year of volunteer services for its operations and capital funding. Listener donations and under-writing support are tax deductible to the extent of the law.
