This children´s museum is an interactive center focused on health. The YouZeum´s goal is to provide an exciting learning environment where visitors can better understand the workings of the human body and the healthy choices they can make. The YouZeum is housed in a three-story, 30,000 sq. ft. building that once housed the U.S. Post Office.

Orr Street Studios
Walnut and Orr
Former warehouses and offices will be renovated for artist studios and gallery space. Improvements to the site include re-grading the land, replacing overhead doors with glass, installing open ventilation and sinks, and placement of art pieces in the courtyard. Studios are expected to be between 100 and 200 square feet, with a common break area. These art studios are part of a larger program to attract artists and other creative workers to the neighborhood north of The District, known as The Village.

Canopy Removal & Facade Repairs
Broadway
Property owners are currently in the process of planning a complete or partial removal of the Broadway canopies. An application to place downtown Columbia on the National Register of Historic Places was just submitted so many buildings will be eligible for preservation tax credits. A number of owners are planning significant renovations, including the Elvira Building. Currently home to Buchroeder's Jewelers, the plan is to restore the original facade and transform the two upper stories into residential spaces. All apartments were leased before the renovation plans were even announced.
Projected investment: $150,000 for removal + facade repair costs

The Historic Missouri Theatre

The Missouri Symphony Society purchased the 1209-seat Missouri Theatre in 1987 to serve as the home venue for the orchestra. Built in 1928, the theatre is central Missouri´s only pre-Depression era movie palace/vaudeville stage and is on the National Register of Historic Places. It continues to serve not only as the home of the Missouri Symphony Society, but also as a performing arts venue for other arts groups. As steward of this historic landmark, the Missouri Symphony Society has made the preservation and restoration of this magnificent building part of its mission. Currently, interior repairs are being made and planning for both exterior and interior historic rehabilitation is in the works.

Flat Branch Park/MKT-KATY Trail
Elm St. to Locust St.
Phase II of the park includes the restoration of Flat Branch Creek; construction walkways, sitting areas and a new parking lot; the construction of an interactive water fountain; the routing of the MKT Trail under Locust and Elm Streets; the installation of two art sculptures; and the construction of a bridge over the creek. This will complete the connection from the KATY Trail to Columbia's central city.

LRW Costume Gallery
College & Broadway, Stephens College
The Stephens College Costume Research Library (CRL) is housed at Stephens College, the second-oldest women´s college in the nation and only four-year women´s institution of higher education in Missouri. The Library, Missouri´s most extensive collection of historical dress, consists of more than 12,000 items such as couture/designer pieces, wedding dresses, beaded gowns, an extensive Oleg Cassini collection, and more than 2,000 accessories, including footwear, handbags and jewelry dating back to the 1770s. The renovation of Lela Raney Wood Hall began in Fall 2002 as part of The Campaign for Stephens: "It´s Her Turn." LRW will give the costume collection room for enhanced conservation, more storage space and the proper archival conditions necessary for preserving the garments. The newly renovated interior will feature a grand ballroom, several meeting spaces, and a spacious gallery to exhibit the collection. This gallery and vast collection, unique to Stephens College, will attract visitors from around the country, including fashion students, researchers, professionals and enthusiasts. Donald W. Reynolds Journalism Institute
Francis Quadrangle, MU
This new center will focus on advanced studies of journalism and its role in democratic societies. The Institute will be a state-of-the-art facility with the heart of the Institute in a Futures Laboratory and a Technology Demonstration and Research Center. The Futures Laboratory will be a place where faculty, visiting professionals and scholars test and report on new approaches to journalism and advertising. Included in this area will be collaborative workspaces, which will provide versatile space for teaching and project teamwork, a TV studio, space for editing workstations and editors' offices. Adjacent to the Futures Laboratory will be a Technology Demonstration and Research Center, where new media-related technologies will be tried out and demonstrated for media professionals.

Life Sciences Center
College Ave., MU
At the MU Life Sciences Center, researchers, staff and students at the Life Science Center are working in interdisciplinary collaboration to meet the global challenges related to food, health and the environment. Located at the northwest corner of the College Avenue and Rollins Street intersection, the Life Sciences Center provides 231,000 gross square feet of space to house scientists from the College of Agriculture, Food & Natural Resources, School of Medicine, College of Arts & Sciences, College of Veterinary Medicine, Engineering and College of Human Environmental Sciences. The Center´s facilities bring researchers together for interdisciplinary research, teaching, and outreach in genetic technologies. The facility features laboratories, computer labs, a greenhouse and a DNA research facility. Teaching will take place in technology-advanced classrooms and an expansive auditorium.

Wood Hall and Columbia Hall
College & Broadway, Stephens College
As more students are signing on and space is running short, Columbia and Wood are slated for rehabilitation to make room for the college´s expanding enrollment. Columbia and Wood halls are on the National Register of Historic Places, so many of the major features of the buildings will be preserved. Inside, where the major changes will take place, kitchens will be added in Columbia Hall to transform single-person dorm rooms into two- and four-bedroom apartments. Elevators will be installed to make the building more accessible. The original hall ceilings will be revealed after the removal of the lower, dropped-ceilings. Windows on the bottom floors will be restored, while the higher, more damaged windows will be replaced. The renovations will add an estimated 300 new residents to The District.

Campus Housing
Multiple locations, MU
Enrollment at the University of Missouri is reaching new highs and the university has added or renovated a number of buildings dedicated to student housing. Construction is planned, progressing or completed on Hatch Hall, Southwest Campus Housing, Mid-Campus Housing, College Avenue Housing and Virginia Avenue Housing. The renovations will bring more than 2500 residents to The District.

Boone County Courthouse Expansion
8th & Walnut
This addition to the historic Boone County Courthouse will expand the County Prosecutor's office, create additional courtroom and jury space and provide additional office space. Also planned is a third floor expansion of the Roger Wilson Building.

Methodist Church Expansion

This new, multi-story building will be centered around the idea of flex or multi-purpose space. Highlights of the new building: Community room to support local activities; educational rooms for youth and adult study; recreation space for all; enhanced Music Program space; office space as needed for new programs; contemporary worship service space; new youth space; renovation of children/nursery areas.

Historic Avenue of the Columns

Currently, major efforts are underway to revitalize and energize this historic area of Columbia. Members of the Eighth Street Beautification Committee completed the first step of the Eighth Street master plan in 1997 with the dedication of Courthouse Square. Reformed several years later as the Historic Avenue of the Columns Committee, this group of property owners, government representatives and other interested parties reviewed different proposals for the Avenue. The chosen master plan for Eighth Street includes both short and long term projects such as new multi-use developments, attracting new residents and new retailers, adding more trees and benches, and creating an atmosphere emphasizing arts and culture. Commemorating the historic aspect of Eighth Street, the Historic Avenue of the Columns will still emphasize this relationship between the university and the city, and will become a classic and inviting area for new restaurants, businesses, and housing complexes.

The J.W. "Blind" Boone Home

Preliminary renovation of the house began in 2002 with the removal of the aluminum siding and other non-historic additions made over the years. Led by the J.W. Boone Heritage Foundation, the fully restored building will ultimately become a Ragtime Museum dedicated to the life and music of Blind Boone. The museum will feature exhibits on the history of "Blind" Boone and this unique musical genre, and plans are being developed to build a nearby performing arts center that will host Ragtime concerts as well.
